With the effective date of the Regulation nearing, last Thursday, the European Commission published its long-awaited global list of conflict-affected and high-risk areas, or CAHRAs. The Regulation is concerned with sourcing from CAHRAs anywhere in the world. The EU passed a Regulation on Conflict Minerals ("the Regulation") back in 2017 and its requirements will finally begin to apply to importers of covered minerals as of 1 January 2021. The objective of the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation is to ensure that importers, smelters, and refiners of 3TG source responsibly and ethically. The ultimate goal is to attain sustainable sourcing for more than 95% of minerals that are today still largely illegally exploited in areas of political unrest to the detriment of local communities. 2016-02-17 In mineral trade, the EU has identified primary ‘conflict minerals’, which are tin, tungsten, tantalum, and gold, which are also referred to as 3TG. The EU regulation covers the sourcing of conflict minerals from anywhere in the world.
